The Australian Labradoodle is a breed that is gaining increasing popularity worldwide. These dogs captivate not only with their unique appearance but, most importantly, with their intelligence, ease of training, and incredibly friendly temperament. Additionally, for many dog lovers who suffer from allergies, the Australian Labradoodle may turn out to be a dream come true.
In 1989, Wally Conron, a breeder from The Royal Victorian Guide Dogs Association, was tasked with creating a guide dog for a blind woman whose husband had allergies. He crossed a Labrador Retriever with a Poodle, hoping for intelligence and a low-shedding coat. The first litter consisted of three puppies, but only one had the desired traits. Many of the dogs from this line had difficult temperaments, which led Conron to ultimately discontinue the breeding program.
However, the growing interest in Labradoodles inspired Australian breeders Beverley Manners and her daughter Angela to continue Conron’s work, but in a more controlled manner. To improve temperament and the consistency of traits, they introduced additional breeds into the line, such as the Irish Water Spaniel, Cocker Spaniel, and Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier. After years of careful selection, they succeeded in creating dogs with a predictable appearance, hypoallergenic coats, and excellent temperaments.
Labradoodles, whether first-generation crosses or later generations (such as F1, F2, etc.), can vary in appearance, temperament, and shedding levels. In contrast, the Australian Labradoodle has been carefully developed to maintain desirable traits. Its genetic makeup includes Labrador Retriever, Poodle (Standard and Miniature), Irish Water Spaniel, English and American Cocker Spaniel, and Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier. As a result, the Australian Labradoodle has a more consistent build, a predictable temperament, and an allergy-friendly coat. Therefore, it is important to emphasize that the Australian Labradoodle is NOT simply a mix of a Poodle and a Labrador.
As you probably know, the Australian Labradoodle is one of the hypoallergenic breeds, meaning its coat is allergy-friendly. However, it’s important to remember that allergic reactions can be triggered not only by fur but also by a dog’s saliva, skin flakes, or even urine. That’s why the best way to determine if this breed is right for you is to visit our kennel. We invite you to meet our dogs, spend some time with them, and see how you react in their presence.
